We've had a miraculous recovery from yesterday when we wondered if we are getting too old for time travel. Early to bed followed by a “full English” at our B&B, we were ready to start on our list.
We headed off to Bru na Boinne), a world heritage site. Neolithic (late stone age) people might not have had cell phones but they clearly had smarts! Advanced skills in engineering, geology, art and astronomy are all evident in the giant burial mounds in the Boyne Valley. We visited two: Knowth and Newgrange.
We crept into the darkened main chamber of Newgrange and were treated to an electric sample of the winter solstice appearance of light. A lottery is held each year for 20 people to sit in the darkened central chamber and see the real thing. I was tempted.
Bill and I spent three hours with two different Irish fellas leading us back through time as we toured the two sites. They are archeologists so were able to venture far past the script. We felt informed and loved it.
And did I mention the weather? It moved from light rain to a downpour accompanied by gale-force winds! But it is warm and believe it or not, hardly dampened our enthusiasm!
