Stone walls

The hillsides are covered with stone walls - none of them very high but apparently high enough for sheep! That dastardly Cromwell famously told Catholic peasants to "Go to Hell or Go to Connaught!", one of the ancient Irish provinces - a rock-filled land with no soil. So the stones had to go somewhere and fences resulted. Over the centuries, the peasants also laboured to add fertility to the land by adding seaweed and sand. Their hardship is unimaginable.
A more prosperous farm with gates in the wall.

A maze of walls

The "V" in the wall is the usual gate - remove those stones and let the sheep through.

A hill of stone walls. The walls and sheep go up into the clouds!

A field still in original condition. Stone-covered and boggy.

  1. Our ancestors led such arduous lives. I complain about housework...imagine what those women endured!
